Venue: Shehjar Complex, Inderhama Batapora, Srinagar
Last date to apply: 30 October 2026
Himalayan Pastoral Trust (HPT), under its Grasslands to Classrooms initiative and in collaboration with Reroot Foundation of India, invites seasonal mobile school teachers and educators working with pastoral and nomadic communities in Jammu and Kashmir to a three-day capacity-building workshop on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN).
The workshop aims to create engaging, meaningful learning experiences that connect foundational skills with children’s everyday lives, languages, cultures and surroundings.
About the Workshop
The seasonal movement of nomadic pastoral communities creates particular challenges for mobile school teachers: interrupted learning, mixed-age classrooms, diverse learning levels and limited teaching resources. When children migrate with their families across settlements and grazing landscapes, keeping learning continuous and building strong foundational skills calls for flexible, inclusive and context-specific teaching.
This workshop will help teachers strengthen their practice through practical, activity-based and experiential methods. Teachers will draw on stories, songs, play, local languages (including Gojri) and the natural environment to make learning more engaging and accessible for children of different ages and levels.
Key focus areas:
- Adapting teaching strategies for multilevel classrooms
- Developing low-cost teaching-learning materials
- Identifying learning gaps
- Using simple assessment methods to track children’s progress
- Building on children’s existing knowledge and experiences
Our aim is to stand with mobile teachers in creating learning spaces where every pastoral child has the same opportunity as any other child.
What Are Seasonal Mobile Schools?
Seasonal Mobile Schools are an initiative of the Government of J&K, designed to meet the learning needs of children from pastoral communities who migrate with their families. The schools operate along migration routes or at temporary camps in the grasslands during the summer migration period in the alpine grasslands of Kashmir.
